York's Allotment Heritage Project examines the development of York's council-owned allotment gardens from their origins at the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day.

This is a community-based project designed to enable York's residents, individual allotment gardeners and allotment associations to explore the history and heritage of York's allotment gardens.

The history of allotments in York is a story which encompasses a great deal of different perspectives and reflects the way the city itself has altered and developed. The importance of allotments for leisure, welfare, family life, community life and for the wider environment in York is demonstrated in this history: York's allotment heritage is significant.
